This beast happens to be a Notifier 500 series fire alarm control. Everything looks okay, but let's not judge a panel with it's door closed.

Notifier 500 Panel

On closer inspection, we see the system is displaying an intermittent trouble from bell circuit #2 (NAC 2):

NAC 2 Trouble

What's that across the NAC 2 terminals? By gum, it looks like a resistor! It IS a resistor!

EOL Resistor on NAC 2

The individual who tagged off on this system has one of the lowest RFP numbers in the business. You would think he knew better!

Fairlane Fire Tag

As you can see, everything is just peachy with the fire alarm system (at least according to the tag). Apparently this control started manifesting an intermittent "trouble" on (you guessed it) NAC 2 shortly after the date of this inspection. The end-of-line resistor was moved from the plate in the hallway to the fire alarm control. This didn't, however, solve the problem which was finally traced to the faulty CPU card on which both the primary NAC circuits are located. Notifier has very few of these cards left (the 500 series has been out of production for a couple of years), and they're expensive. Thankfully, the building owners decided to replace this control (rather than risk keeping the old system in service).

It's extremely important for the servicing technician to provide a clear indication that the fire alarm system is compromised. The proper thing to do here would have been to deface the tag with a large red "X".

This isn't the only reason we've decided to nominate Fairlane for a Brickee however. The building's parkade has NO portable fire extinguishers (there is one located in the locked elevator lobby, but it's not accessible without a valid keyfob and isn't visible from anywhere in the parkade), sprinkler system coverage has been compromised due to modifications to certain parking stalls (several have been enclosed by the building owners to serve as tenant storage units), and they failed to recognize the incorrectly installed fire alarm communicator (featured HERE). This technician responsible for this fiasco is now the subject of an ASTTBC inquiry and the honour of this Burning Brick Nomination!

ULC Compatibility Index

You'll be prompted to either "save as" or "open" a Microsoft® Excel document.
Please read our Terms of Use!

Note: It is important to note that the panel manufacturer (in Canada) must list compatible smoke detectors. Using a non-compliant smoke detector with any ULC® Listed fire alarm control invalidates its certification and could place the building occupants at risk. If you have questions regarding compatibility of a particular smoke detector (not shown on the list), please contact the manufacturer.
